Welcome

If you are new to our blog, then welcome! Today we are talking about vitamins, but in general, we are here to help educate our clients in medical weight loss as we have been doing for over 40 years. In the coming weeks, we will have a new blog post each week featuring a different vitamin or mineral. Understanding what we eat is one of the most important things we can do when it comes to our health and weight management.

In the bustling world of nutrition and health, vitamins stand as pivotal players in maintaining our well-being. Through this series, we embark on a weekly exploration, unraveling the mysteries and wonders of vitamins. This introductory piece sets the stage for a deeper understanding of these vital nutrients. We are keeping these articles shorter than our usual ones so they are easier to read and don’t get overwhelming.

What are Vitamins?

Vitamins are organic compounds crucial for various metabolic processes. Unlike macronutrients like carbohydrates and fats, vitamins are needed in smaller quantities but are equally vital for growth, disease prevention, and overall health. Whole foods like vegetables, beef, fish, nuts, seeds, etc. are all rich in vitamins. Processed foods like fast food, shelf stable foods, and most microwavable meals tend to be low in vitamins. Which can cause us to become deficient and develop further health problems.

Types of Vitamins

Vitamins are categorized into two types: fat-soluble (Vitamins A, D, E, and K) and water-soluble (B Vitamins and Vitamin C). Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body’s fatty tissues, while water-soluble vitamins must be replenished regularly. It can be easier to get too much of A, D, E, and K. So it is important to pay attention to what supplements you take with these. With that being said, 98% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D. It is rare to see someone getting too many vitamins, it is more common that we don’t have enough.

When in doubt, talk to your medical provider and ask for a blood panel to see what your levels are at.

The Role of Vitamins in the Body

Each vitamin plays a unique role. Some examples include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Vitamin A: Essential for vision and immune function.
  • B Vitamins: Key players in energy production and nervous system health.
  • Vitamin C: Important for skin health and immune function.
  • Vitamin D: Crucial for bone health and immune response.
  • Vitamin E: Acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells from damage.
  • Vitamin K: Vital for blood clotting and bone health.

Over the next few weeks we will be going more in depth on each vitamin, it’s job, what happens if you get too much of it, too little of it, and what foods you can find it in!

Sources of Vitamins

A balanced diet is the best way to obtain vitamins. Fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, nuts, and dairy are rich in various vitamins. However, in certain cases, supplementation might be necessary, often guided by healthcare professionals. Vitamins and Health

Adequate vitamin intake is essential for preventing deficiencies, which can lead to various health issues like scurvy (Vitamin C deficiency), rickets (Vitamin D deficiency), and anemia (certain B Vitamins deficiency). Many of these ancient diseases have been eradicated as global hunger has been irradiated. Not to mention how many of our packaged foods are also fortified with additional vitamins. However, there are still many health issues that exist in our country due to vitamin deficiencies. Did you ever hear of the teenager who was dying from malnourishment even though she ate all the time?
